Feeling a little extra love for Jon lately. I blame the Rain re-writes. 😛
Jon is very near and dear to me- I think he’s the man I want to be, wish I could be, am trying to live up to. We could all use a little Jon in our lives.
This. This was a gem. It’s a random list of questions for your characters to help you get in touch with them..
I’m not positive on the timeline, but I know Jon’s strained relationship with his family is part of why he is with Rook now. Maybe someday, he’ll share some specifics, but at this point, Jon’s family is one of those topics I don’t pester him about. Being Rook’s “familiar” is pain enough.
2.) What are your characters most prominent physical features?
Broken nose. Big, thick eyebrows. Being 6’plus and built like a bouncer.
3.) Name one scar your character has, and tell us where it came from. If they don’t have any, is there a reason?
Jon has a small scar along the very edge of his left eyebrow, from a fight. Not sure about any more than that, and honestly, I’m lucky he just volunteered that much. I don’t think he would have, except that he likes the way Lena will gently trace it when they’re lying in bed.
4.) How vain is your character? Do they find themselves attractive?
Anyone who spends enough time with Rook will be acutely aware of appearances, and their effects on people, but largely, Jon doesn’t care.
5.) What’s your character’s ranking on the KINSEY SCALE?
Heh. This one is tricky. While Jon is fairly indifferent to his partner’s gender, he doesn’t really find men all that attractive. But he’s not opposed to the idea-if he were to find a man attractive, he would probably act on it, but the thoughts just do nothing for him.
Until Chris gets out that one blonde wig, with that particular shade of pink lipstick….
6.) Describe your character’s happiest memory.
The upcoming snow day in Asylum. Lena stays the night with him and a terrible storm hits, knocking out the power and stranding them at his house outside the city. They camp out in the livingroom, keeping the fireplace nice and built up. While Jon gets out his old camp cooking skills and dutch oven, Lena gets out his old photo albums. Good times.
7.) Is there one event or happening your character would like to erase from their past? Why?
Nope. Not something he’s willing to to talk about.
8.) Day of Favorites! What’s your character’s favorite ice cream flavor? Color? Song? Flower?
Lavender. Claims he doesn’t have one (forget-me-not blue), Pat Benatar, Outlaw Blues (huh, really?), forget-me-nots (not that he’ll admit that either)
9.) Who does your character trust?
Rook. Completely and without hesitation.
10.) Can you define a turning point in your character’s life? Multiples are acceptable.
Meeting Rook. Meeting Lena. That one weekend with Lena and Chris.
11.) Is there an animal you equate with your character?
Hyena- cause, ya know, he’s a shapeshifter. Otherwise… Jon kinda reminds me of a bear.
12.) How is your character with technology? Super savvy, or way behind the times? Letters or email?
Jon stays up to date. He’s the only thing that keeps Rook tethered to the here and now sometimes.
13.) What does your character’s bed look like when he/she wakes up? Are the covers off on one side of the bed, are they all curled around a pillow, sprawled everywhere? In what position might they sleep?
Jon tends to sleep on his back, pretty hard and solid. He usually throws the covers off his chest when he sleeps, he doesn’t like feeling so closed in, though it’s not a conscious thought. But he ALWAYS makes the bed when he gets up. Always.
14.) How does your character react to temperature changes such as extreme heat and cold?
He puts on a sweater. Or doesn’t, as needed.
15.) Is your character an early morning bird or a night owl?
Jon does equally well with early mornings or late nights. He prefers the quietude of early morning, but has adapted to the late nights of a bartender.
16.) Are there any blood relatives that your character is particularly close with, besides the immediate ones? Cousins, Uncles, Grandfathers, Aunts, et cetera. Are there any others that your character practically considers a blood relative?
No. Jon isn’t close to anyone but Rook. If you ask him, he won’t answer (though he does have that photo album, which makes me wonder what’s in it…)
17.) What’s your character’s desk/workspace look like? Are they neat or messy?
Jon attempts to be tidy, but he’s fighting the force of nature that is Rook.
18.) Is your character a good cook? What’s their favorite recipe, whether they’re good or not? (Microwave mac-and-cheese applies.)
Jon doesn’t consider himself a particularly skilled chef, but what he does know how to make, he makes good. He’s a meat and potatoes kinda guy, and loves to grill out steaks.
19.) What’s your character’s preferred means of travel?
Jon actually quite likes cars. Much better than horses. And anything is better than flying.
20.) Does your character have any irrational fears?
None that he’s let me see.
21.) What would your character’s CUTIE MARK be?
A scowl 😛
22.) If your character could time travel, where would they go?
Wherever Rook needed him to.
23.) Is your character superstitious?
Not any more so than any of the other older characters. Superstitions don’t seem as silly when you’re old enough to remember why you did the things you did.
24.) What might your character’s ideal romantic partner be?
Lena. No seriously, she’s exactly what he needs. She reminds him to be soft and tender, to go slow and enjoy the little things. She needs him to be strong, but gentle, and adores him for him. That is exactly what he needs.
25.) Describe your character’s hands. Are they small, long, calloused, smooth, stubby?
Thick, strong- the kind of hands that make you feel like your waist is itty bitty, like he could snap you in half. They’re not as rough as they used to be, and Jon had actually quite embraced the “Sergi! We’re going for manicures!” moments from Rook.
26.) Second day of favorites! Favorite comfort food, favorite vice, favorite outfit, favorite hot drink, favorite time of year, and favorite holiday.
Skillet bread. Huh, didn’t see that one coming. For vices… Jon enjoys a few beers on his rare days off, but I’d hardly call it a vice… Clothes are almost always jeans, t-shirt, boots… Coffee for the hot drin- no? Ok then, smartypants, what is your favorite hot drink? …Oh, ok then. Apparently, Jon quite loves hot apple cider, provided its made over a campfire, so it gets all smokey and nice. Ok then. *laughs* I guess that makes favorite time of year fall 😛 Favorite holiday- thanksgiving, really? I can’t wait til that one makes sense, Johnny boy.
27.) Pick two songs that describe your character at two different points of their life, and explain why you chose them.
…ya know, I have TONS of these, when I’m just riding around in the car, but I can NEVER remember them once I’m home. 😦
Ooh, ooh I remembered one! Sheryl Crow, Be my Man. I know there are more, but there’s one at least.
…Oh yeah, at one point, Lynard Skynard’s Three Steps came to mind as well, though Jon wouldn’t tell me the story there.
28.) If your character’s life was a genre, what would it be?
Man vs. Nature
29.) How does your character smell? Do they wear perfume or cologne?
Like hard work, and something evergreen.
30.) And finally: Write a letter to your character, from yourself.
You are a good man. Never doubt that. Everything you do is worth it.
Hang in there buddy.
