This. This was a gem. It’s a random list of questions for your characters to help you get in touch with them..
As promised, here it is Seth’s turn.
1.) Describe your character’s relationship with their mother or their father, or both. Was it good? Bad? Were they spoiled rotten, ignored? Do they still get along now, or no?
Seth was somewhat distant from his father, I think. I’ve not really ever seen them interact. Everything I see of him as a child is with his mother, or another older female that might be his grandmother, might be an aunt. I’m not sure.
He loves his mother dearly, though he was somewhat resentful of her in the past. She represented the burden he must carry as future leader of their people, was the source of all his educating in such things. But he admired her strength, and hoped to be much like her when he grew.
I think, if she could speak with him now, she would saw that he has, and that she is proud of him.
2.) What are your characters most prominent physical features?
Probably the darkness of his coloration. His is predominantly Indian in features, strikingly so, and it rather stands out, even in the chimera’s nest that is Asylum. I might say that the most prominent is how angular his face is- there are a lot of harsh lines to it, very strong jaw and bridge of nose, heavy brows- his skull really shows through.
But not in the creepy way that made it sound. BONE STRUCTURE. That was the word I was look for. Bone structure.
3.) Name one scar your character has, and tell us where it came from. If they don’t have any, is there a reason?
This scar is not set in stone at this point, but in one possible version of the future, Seth loses his left eye.
He looks rather dashing in an eyepatch.
4.) How vain is your character? Do they find themselves attractive?
EXTREMELY. ..and yet not. Seth has always used his exotic looks to his advantage. He knows how attractive some find him, though he himself does not understand, or care, why. But he always dresses to his build and coloring, and is quick to take advantage of the fact that someone might not be thinking with their logical heads when dealing with him.
Also, I always confuse vain and arrogant. I don’t think Seth is particularly vain. He’s too practical for that.
5.) What’s your character’s ranking on the KINSEY SCALE?
I’m dropping this in here for reference, because just like pH, I always forget which numbers are in which direction.
Seth, like most serpents, is rather fluid about his sexuality, but not to the extent that Naj is. I would say Naj is either a true 3 or maybe even a 4, surprise surprise there for some of us, but Seth is more likely a 1, when things are going his way.
Kain, shut it.
You too, Chris.
6.) Describe your character’s happiest memory.
Uhh…. Seth doesn’t really get happy memories 😛
Ok, seriously. Seth’s happiest memories are probably actually just before the Agni Dai. He was a young man, dancing on the cusp of assuming responsibility, and making the most of the last of his freedom. There was much cavorting, running around with the rest of the Four Winds, teasing Llorinda and flirting with younger sisters and trying not to be punched in the nose. Lots of dancing, of those that he was allowed to perform. His favorites involved spear dances with Bird, whose usually advantage of long limbs became a hindrance, and engaging in any of the challenge dances with anyone brave enough to go against him. He was actually not all that skilled at them, no where near as skilled as proper dancers, but usually his presence was enough to distract his opponents into messing up.
Except Bird. Bird never saw his as anything but Cobra, and he smoked Seth nearly every time.
7.) Is there one event or happening your character would like to erase from their past? Why?
There are too many to count. But Seth is practical- everything that has happened to him has brought him to where he is today. Today is a good day. He would not trade it for all the maybes or what-ifs in the world.
8.) Day of Favorites! What’s your character’s favorite ice cream flavor? Color? Song? Flower?
Ice Cream-Red Bean? Seriously? I’ve never even had that, how do you know you like it? Anyways.
Color- Red, but I think that’s just because he knows how good he looks in it.
Song- He doesn’t recall the name, but his mother used to sing it to him when trying to put him to sleep
Flower-Dahliahs. The red ones, that go dark in the center. They remind him of cobra scales 😛
9.) Who does your character trust?
Nica. Completely. He cannot ask for her trust if he is not willing to give it.
10.) Can you define a turning point in your character’s life? Multiples are acceptable.
Being taken by the Dai. Fleeing Europe. Meeting Nica.
11.) Is there an animal you equate with your character?
Um, serpent? 😛 Otherwise, Seth sort of reminds me of an owl.
12.) How is your character with technology? Super savvy, or way behind the times? Letters or email?
Any. Seth is eager to embrace any form of communication and knowledge. He keeps several correspondences by letter and by email, and reads avidly. Fortunately, he’s not discovered Wikipedia yet, or we’d have lost him completely.
13.) What does your character’s bed look like when he/she wakes up? Are the covers off on one side of the bed, are they all curled around a pillow, sprawled everywhere? In what position might they sleep?
It really depends on if he’s slept in it or not, or if Kisma has come to steal his bed while he is away from it. Most mornings, his bed is made up neatly and untouched, for he has found other places to sleep.
14.) How does your character react to temperature changes such as extreme heat and cold?
As a serpent, he does not do well in extreme cold. Heat much be beyond extreme to really bother him. However, unlike Naj, he is loathe to ask for cuddles if he needs it, so it’s not uncommon to find him sluggish and slow to react because he really ought to have sought out company sooner. Makes him easy to stealth glomp though, so he can’t get away from your lovin’s.
15.) Is your character an early morning bird or a night owl?
By Asylum standards, he rises early, but it’s not uncommon to find he has simply not slept, being caught up all night in whatever he is researching.
16.) Are there any blood relatives that your character is particularly close with, besides the immediate ones? Cousins, Uncles, Grandfathers, Aunts, et cetera. Are there any others that your character practically considers a blood relative?
As far as we both know, Seth’s only remaining blood relative is Naj.
17.) What’s your character’s desk/workspace look like? Are they neat or messy?
There is a method to Seth’s madness, but what it might be, I cannot tell. Granted, his space is MUCH more organized than mine, but it is equally overcrowded with books, papers, and miscellany.
18.) Is your character a good cook? What’s their favorite recipe, whether they’re good or not? (Microwave mac-and-cheese applies.)
Seth has (will have?) gotten into cooking as he’s settled into life at Asylum. Bernard, a transplanted chef from New York, teaches Seth something every time he goes to stay at the B&B Hannah and Bernard run. The dancers eagerly await his return from such trips, to sample Seth’s practice.
Currently, he is learning Italian, but would like to start playing around with Indian cuisine, so that he doesn’t have to ask Kain for anything. 😛
19.) What’s your character’s preferred means of travel?
As of now, he’s not sure. He does quite enjoy the downtime inherent in plane travel, but demon portal is incredible convenient, and he’s had centuries to adapt to the sickness that usually comes with such spells. He’s yet to take a road trip, but he imagines they can either be quite fun or drive one to murder, depending.
He cannot yet ride a bike, but he should like to learn.
20.) Does your character have any irrational fears?
His fear of heights is completely rational, but he is sure he will overcome it with practice. Nica is helping.
21.) What would your character’s CUTIE MARK be?
The frowning face logo of the Something Positive comic. 😛
22.) If your character could time travel, where would they go?
He would not. There is not benefit in languishing in what-ifs and what-was. He lives in the now, and he is grateful to have the now. It is more than some people have been given.
Also, the future will come in its own time. Why lose today for a tomorrow when you can have both if you are patient?
(Note: Seth has lived for at least 1000 years that I am sure of. He’s seen it all, at this point.)
23.) Is your character superstitious?
Not as much as his kin-folk were, but there is a certain amount of superstition mixed into the old religions, and it is difficult to overcome one’s upbringing. Like many of the supremely old characters, he is more religious than most, because in his day, the gods were very, very real.
24.) What might your character’s ideal romantic partner be?
Nica, honestly. She fits him in ways he didn’t know he could be matched.
Could stand to have a slightly rounder bottom though.
25.) Describe your character’s hands. Are they small, long, calloused, smooth, stubby?
Dexterous, very deft. His fingers are long and thin, knuckles fairly prominent, but not as much as they will be when (if?) his age catches up with him. The skin is soft and smooth from years of relative idleness, but he picked up knitting pretty quickly the one night I left him alone with my yarn, so….
26.) Second day of favorites! Favorite comfort food, favorite vice, favorite outfit, favorite hot drink, favorite time of year, and favorite holiday.
Food- Chickpeas. I don’t recall the name of the dish, but it’s a chickpea curry.
Vice- it’s only a vice if you view it as such 😉 Author’s note: He drinks when we write together every chance I give him. He is partial to wines.
Outfit- anything comfortable? whatever he looks stunning in? it really depends on the goal here. His most commonly worn outfit is a pair of cotton or linen slacks, black or grey, with some sort of button up shirt, usually pushed up at the sleeves and unbuttons to mid-chest. His choice of wardrobe is an old habit. His adaptations for comfort are just another way he’s enjoying the modern world.
27.) Pick two songs that describe your character at two different points of their life, and explain why you chose them.
…this question is always harder than it should be. I’ll try to keep it in mind as I let Pandora roll throughout the day, and maybe make a collection of songs that remind me of people for another post- if someone is interested. Just remind me people, I’ll do what I can.
28.) If your character’s life was a genre, what would it be?
A Sherlock Holmes book? 😛
29.) How does your character smell? Do they wear perfume or cologne?
Like all serpents, he is slightly musky/spicy. Years of keeping his things in a redwood box has left its mark on his personal idea of his scent, so Dev included that for him (spoiler alert there, so I’ll simple settle on being vague). All of the Asylum dancers tend to smell of various herbs, due to Kain’s love of gifting handmade soaps.
If you want to recreate the smell of Seth at home, mix cedar oil with patchouli, and you’re pretty close.
30.) And finally: Write a letter to your character, from yourself.
You are an ass. You know this.
I love you anyways.
