Daily Prompt: Look who’s come for dinner

Today’s Daily Prompt took my brain in so many directions.

You walk into your home to find a couple you don’t know sitting in your living room, eating a slice of cake. Tell us what happens next.

However, one tale stood out from the rest.

Jon didn’t know how this girl was, but he was certain this was somehow Rook’s fault. How else would someone wind up sitting in his living room when his door was still locked – and warded?

He hung up his coat and keys, ignoring this disruption to his day, as he did all of Rook’s disruptions. He was like a child- you couldn’t reward him for acting out.

Which is why Jon didn’t yell when he walked into the kitchen to find a slice of Lena’s birthday cake missing.

“So, who are you and why are you here?” he asked calmly, bringing his own slice into the living room and sitting across from his guest. The cake was already ruined, he may as well have some.

“I’m Raleigh, and I’m here because Rook only likes to play at being a good host- as with everything, he left making me comfortable to you.”

“Of course he did.”

Jon allowed himself a small sigh, but otherwise resigned himself. Rook was Rook, he was used to that by now. He looked the stranger over, taking in long frame, careless hair and beat up guitar. Nothing sparked any memories, but he’d been with Rook for a long time- and more importantly, he hadn’t been with Rook that long as far as Rook’s history was concerned. Who knew when and where this girl was from? Rook trusted her enough to zap her straight into Jon’s living room, so he wasn’t too concerned.

“You owe me a new birthday cake for my girlfriend.”

The woman smiled, and something in Jon’s stomach did flip-flops.

“Take that up with the birdie.”
